Glen Alpine's homes
Glen Alpine was developed from around the early 1990s, with streets winding around the golf course and bushland reserves. Homes are generally larger than in the older surrounding suburbs — many are two-storey, four-bedroom houses with a double garage, and built to the project-home standards of their time.
That means these homes typically have:
- A main bathroom, often upstairs
- An ensuite off the main bedroom
- A powder room downstairs in many two-storey homes
- A laundry off the garage or kitchen
The problem is not a lack of bathrooms. It is that all of them are now 20 to 30 years old and fitted out with the builder's range of the day.
The typical fit-out
Main bathroom: a corner spa bath, a shower recess with a framed pivot screen, a vanity with doors and a cultured-marble or laminate top, tiles to about two metres, a single ceiling light.
Ensuite: a corner shower with a framed screen, a single vanity, a mirror on the wall, and often a small exhaust fan vented into the roof space rather than outside.
Powder room: a toilet and a small vanity, often with dated tiles.
None of this has usually failed. It has simply dated, and the layouts often do not suit a household of teenagers.
Family-focused updates
The spa bath. Most have not been filled in years. Replacing it with a standard bath, or a freestanding bath and a larger shower, recovers a surprising amount of floor.
Bigger showers. A corner shower becomes a walk-in with a fixed glass panel, usually on the existing waste.
Double vanities. Many Glen Alpine ensuites and main bathrooms have the wall length for two basins, which eases the morning rush.
Storage. A recessed shaving cabinet, deep drawers and a tall linen cabinet.
Full-height tiling. Removes the painted strip above the two-metre tile line that marks the room as 1990s.
Ventilation. An exhaust fan that vents into the roof space is replaced with one ducted outside.
Upstairs bathrooms
In two-storey homes, the main bathroom is usually upstairs on a timber floor. That brings two considerations:
- Plumbing changes are more flexible than on a slab, because pipes can run in the floor space
- A leak goes into the ceiling below, so waterproofing needs to be done carefully, with a water stop at the door and, where the owner wants the reassurance, a flood test before tiling
Doing more than one room
With two or three wet areas, the question is sequence. Doing the main bathroom and ensuite together shares trades and set-up costs, but most families prefer to stagger them so there is always a working shower. We price them as one project and schedule them back to back.
The powder room is often a quick, satisfying addition — a new wall-hung basin, a feature tile, better lighting — while the trades are already on site.
Bushland edges
Some Glen Alpine streets back onto reserves and bushland. Where a property is mapped as bushfire prone land, external changes such as a new window can have extra requirements. Internal bathroom work is not usually affected. Check with Campbelltown City Council if you plan external work.

Most Glen Alpine homes were built from the 1990s onward, after asbestos was phased out of residential building products, so it is unlikely in the original construction. Any older structures or materials on the property are still checked.
Should we remove the spa bath?
If nobody has used it in years, removing it frees a lot of space. Many families replace it with a standard or freestanding bath and a larger shower. If you have young children, keep a bath of some kind.
